Seborrheic Keratosis: A Treatable Skin Growth
The name Seborrheic Keratosis, to some, sounds like an elegant breed of dog from the Eastern European Balkans region, somewhere near the country of Dalmatia, famous for its spotted canine breed.
In the Aesthetic world, a seborrheic keratosis is the term we give to those waxy looking brown, black or tan spots which develop on our skin. These growths can be raised or flat and occur on the face, chest, shoulders, or especially on the skin of our backs. These growths are very common on ageing skin and are usually non-cancerous. A dermatologist can make that determination for you if you are worried about particular dark spots.
As with many skin abnormalities, seborrheic keratoses (plural) usually begin to occur on our bodies during middle age and can multiply as we become elderly. They are not contagious and tend to be a familial trait.
Removal of the seborrheic keratoses can be quickly and easily accomplished by your Aesthetician or Nurse. There are several methods that they can choose from depending on whether the spot is raised, flat, thin or thick. Laser ablation and vaporization can give a clean, cosmetic outcome if the spot is on a highly visible part of your body. The laser will use focused, high-energy light to destroy the cells layer by layer. The treatment will turn gray or form a crust which will fall off in a few days’ time. The Lamprobe radiofrequency pen is another treatment tool that may be used.
A Dermatologist may choose to use cryosurgery with very cold liquid nitrogen or an electrosurgery device.
An anesthetic lidocaine crème can be applied to the area prior to any of the above treatments which can lessen the pain which may occur during the short procedure. The skin around the treated area may be a lighter tone for a short time but this will usually fade over time. The seborrheic keratosis will usually not return to a treated spot but may require a second treatment if it does re-occur.
Our staff can explain seborrheic keratoses and discuss the treatment options more completely during your consult to help you better understand your own skin needs.
